Polar bears present a challenge for tracking and observation in their natural habitat due to their solitary nature, extensive yearly wanderings covering thousands of miles, and the secretive birthing process of cubs within snow-covered dens amidst the ever-changing Arctic landscape.

Given these challenges, how do scientists manage to study polar bears in the wild?

This lesson developed by Science Friday will delve into the methods scientists employ to track and assess individual polar bears, aiming to gain insights into the overall health of the population.  The objective is to understand the impact of Arctic ecosystem changes, particularly the loss of sea ice, on this species.

Throughout the lesson, students will step into the shoes of a researcher, experiencing the process of tranquilizing and measuring a polar bear in its natural environment. Additionally, learners will have the opportunity to analyze real health data collected from polar bears, offering a firsthand glimpse into the complexities of studying this iconic Arctic species.
