Career planning online course open for registration!

Integrating Career Awareness into the ABE/ESOL ClassroomFebruary 23 - April 5, 2016

Integrating Career Awareness into the ABE/ESOL Classroom is a fully facilitated, asynchronous, online course (there's no need to be online at specific times). Estimated completion time is 3-4 hours a week for a total of 24 hours. Our task here is to help adult students gain skills that can help them attain and succeed in the available jobs that pay family-sustaining wages. This course will help you guide students through a process that helps them set career goals and secure the educational services they need to pursue their personal and employment goals in the changing economy.

Recent participants have commented:

"I really enjoyed this class! I would say that this class was extremely helpful and I learned a lot that will transfer over to help my clients. I really believe that my clients will like the worksheets and career readiness skills that I have learned. I also really liked how as a class we were able to post and communicate and gain different ideas from each other, that really opened my eyes!"

"I am so grateful to have a resource for Career Awareness & Career Development. I liked how the lessons built on one another and I felt very creative with adding my own pre-post lesson activities. This is great material that could be applied to many different student groups from traditional 8th-12th grade high school students, to Freshman Experience Classes on campus, to ABE & ESOL classrooms, to one-on-one personal career counseling. I really appreciate how broadly applicable the information and resources are!"

"I thought I was pretty knowledgeable about how to approach career pathways but quickly learned that there is so much more to learn. I greatly appreciated the options to choose from for activities and will definitely use them. I'm excited to try these new things within my area and see how it pans out."

Leah,

Thanks for sharing this resource with the Career Pathways community.  Would you tell us a little more about its development?  Is the curriculum based on any particular set of competencies or standards?  Are course completers able to print a certificate verifying their participation?

Thanks,

Hello Mike,

I'm sorry I didn't see your questions sooner. The course is starting today, though there are still spaces available if anyone wanted to jump in. Yes, a certificate is available for completing the course with 24 hours marked as the completion time. To complete the course, participants take part in discussion forums and assignments, and then complete a final lesson plan project. The curriculum is freely available online, so if it looks like something you might use, the course will likely be of interest as well. Each lesson is correlated with the SCANS standards. There are more details along those lines in the curriculum's introduction (pp.12-14). The course was designed by World Education's Sandy Goodman who was also one of the authors of the curriculum.

For anyone who is interested but missed the current course, you can sign up to be notified the next time it gets offered. It's only offered once or twice a year though, so if you don't want to wait, get a group together and contact me and I can set up a session for you.

Best,

Leah Peterson
