CTE Research Network Training Institute: Summer 2020

The Career and Technical Education Research Center (CTERN) will offer our first CTE Research Network Training Institute in summer 2020. The CTERN is committed to supporting the development of the next generation of researchers who will contribute to the growing evidence base of effective CTE. We will offer a three-day intensive training on skills and strategies to plan and conduct high-quality impact studies of CTE programs, practices, and policies. The training will be designed and conducted by experienced CTE researchers and expert research methodologists.

What will participants learn at the Training Institute?

The agenda includes presentation of CTE research exemplars; rigorous training in appropriate research designs and statistical approaches for CTE research; data and measurement considerations for working with local, state, and national CTE data; and “data labs” where participants will gain hands-on experience working with data to apply the statistical concepts presented. The Training Institute will describe causal research designs in the context of typical CTE programs, including randomized controlled trials, regression discontinuity design, and comparative interrupted time series. The small class size of 15–20 people will allow for plenty of interaction with instructors and personalized feedback.

Who can apply to the Training Institute?

Eligible applicants need to be working toward or have a Ph.D. or Ed.D. as well as quantitative research experience and an interest in CTE. We will review applications and select those with demonstrated potential to benefit from the course and to conduct CTE evaluation research. Early career researchers will be prioritized. Qualified individuals with disabilities will be encouraged to apply and given reasonable accommodations. Applicants who are not accepted can reapply the following summer.

What will the Training Institute cost for participants?

There is no cost to attend the Training Institute. Accepted participants can apply for reimbursement for up to $1,000 for travel and lodging costs.

Where and when will the Training Institute be held?

The Summer 2020 Training Institute will be held in the Washington, DC area. The date will be announced in the coming months.
