Perkins Act Reauthorized in the House of Representatives

On September 13th, the U.S House of Representatives voted 405-5 (with 22 not voting) to approve the “Strengthening Career and Technical Education for the 21st Century Act” (H.R. 5587). This legislation would reauthorize the Carl D. Perkins Career and Technical Education Act of 2006 through Fiscal Year (FY) 2022. The final bill approved by the House includes several policy changes, including alignment of post-secondary outcome measures with performance indicators under WIOA, and strengthening connections between WIOA and Perkins state planning.  The full bill is available here.

A bipartisan group of Senators have been working on their own draft bill, and are not expected to take up the House bill in its current form.  This suggests that the reauthorization of the bill will likely not happen until sometime in 2017.
