November 11th is Veterans' Day. In honor of the men and women who have served in a branch of the U.S. military, the U.S. Department of Labor shared the following recent statistics on Veterans' employment status.
According to a March 2020 U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics news release, in August 2019 there were 4.7 million veterans, 25% of whom had a service-connected disability. Their unemployment rate was 4.8%, with a 47.5% labor force participation rate.
The following resources are provided to increase awareness of employment support for Veterans and those who support them in their education, training, and civilian employment needs.
- The Apprenticeship.gov’s Servicemen and Veterans Page provides information and guidance for businesses, active duty military, transitioning service members, and veterans on the benefits and pathways into Registered Apprenticeships.
- The Job Accommodation Network’s Veterans and Service Members Page includes publications and resources that share accommodation situations and solutions for veterans and service members in need. Ask Jan’s Accommodation & Compliance Series: Veterans and Service Members is a downloadable Guide on reasonable accommodations for veterans and service members.
- The U.S Department of Veteran Affairs has Veteran Readiness and Employment resources available to help with job training, employment accommodations, resume development, and job seeking skills coaching.
- The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission provides a Veterans' guide and frequently asked questions for understanding employment rights under the Americans with Disabilities Act in areas such as recruiting, interviewing, special hiring preferences and accommodating Veterans with disabilities.
- The CareerOneStop Veteran and Military Transition Center: For Disabled Veterans shares information on programs and resources to assist disabled Veterans locate assistance with accessing benefits as well as job placement and retention.
- O*Net’s My Next Move for Veterans interactive search engine helps veterans link to the information they need to explore civilian careers and related training, including how to write resumes that highlight related civilian skills.
