Adult Basic Education Director

 

Position Title:                              Adult Basic Education Director

Hours: 36.5 hours per week, with flexibility required. Position may require some evening and weekend work.

Position Summary:  

The goal of the Literacy Network Adult Basic Education program is to provide adults with educational opportunities to acquire and improve their literacy skills so they can become self-sufficient and participate as productive workers, family members, and citizens.  The tutoring director is responsible for tutor program curriculum development, program management, tutor training, learner intake and support relating to Adult Basic Education programs.

 

Adult Basic Education addresses a variety of learner goals.  ABE helps learners to:

·         Attain employment and/or better their current employment;

·         Achieve high school equivalency (GED or Adult H.S. Diploma);

·         Attain skills necessary to enter post-secondary education and training;

·         Exit public welfare and become self-sufficient;

·         Master basic academic skills to help their children succeed in school;

·         Become U.S. citizens and participate in democratic society; and

·         Gain self-esteem, confidence and sense of personal and civic responsibility.

 

Responsibilities:

 

1.     Curriculum development                                                                                              20%

 

·         Develop relevant and engaging tutor training for basic literacy tutors

·         Utilize current research in mentoring, adult education, and literacy acquisition

·         Suggest library development and library acquisitions

 

 

2.     Training and support of tutors                                                                                     40%

·         Assess training needs and oversee tutor training workshops

·         Match tutors and learners and manage their ongoing development

·         Design, develop and implement continuing education for tutors (in-service training)

·         Provide educational planning, information and advising to tutor-learner pairs as requested or as need is determined

·         Consult with other staff about tutor-learner progress and concerns

 

4.     Learner intake and assessment                                                                                  30%

·         Design and implement enrollment and initial learner assessment procedures that are consistent with Literacy Network’s mission and philosophy.  Train appropriate staff in completing assessments. 

·         Conduct learner assessment / orientation interviews and/or review assessments made by other staff members

·         Maintain contacts with other educational programs and referral sources to facilitate learner recruitment and referral

 

5.    Agency Representation and Community Education                                             5%

·         Assist individuals, agencies, and employers wanting information on literacy, reading, ESL, readability, identifying/approaching adults with limited literacy, or other literacy related topics

·         Act as a resource to other community groups working with populations with low literacy levels. 

 

6.     General Office Duties                                                                                                 5%

·         Share telephone and walk-in responsibilities

·         Handle own clerical work

·         Supervise volunteers on office projects relating to areas of responsibility

·         Provide library assistance

·         Clean general office areas

 

Qualifications

 

The well qualified candidate will possess:

 

1.     Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in adult basic education, reading instruction, and/or related degree or significant work experience in the literacy field

 

2.     Experience in planning and implementing adult educational programs

 

3.     Experience working with adults from diverse backgrounds

 

4.     Experience communicating in a variety of settings requiring strong verbal, written, interpersonal and group presentation skills

 

5.     Experience teaching or tutoring in a literacy setting

 

6.     Experience working with basic computer software for word processing and database management

 

7.     Reliable automotive transportation for travel within the City of Madison.
