A short-term crisis creating an opportunity to solve long-term problems

Hello program manager colleagues,

We all hope that the current pandemic is a short-term crisis for our nation and the world, but a short-term crisis often creates the opportunity to solve long-term problems. We make changes and try new things because we must. Some changes don’t work; some are okay; others are better than what we were doing before.

In adult basic skills education these could be changes in any number of things, for example:

  • Staffing (location of teachers, administrators; hiring staff, etc.)
  • Student recruitment
  • Student intake or registration
  • Initial student assessment
  • Curriculum choices
  • Student goal-setting, and monitoring of student goals
  • Instructional mode(s) (in-person, online, hybrid, blended, flex, etc)
  • Professional development
  • Standardized online post assessment
  • Graduation
  • Others?

What changes have you, or has your adult basic skills program or school, made that are better than what you had before the pandemic?
