Available Resources for Adult Students with Visual Disabilities

I am the PDF for Hinds Career Center Adult Ed. program.  I currently have a teacher who has a student with severe visual disabilities.  We are looking for instructional and resource advice on accommodations for this student in an HSE classroom setting.  Any suggestions or advice will be appreciated.

Hello Julie,

I am the manager for PANDA-Minnesota Adult Basic Education Physical and Nonapparent Disability Assistance.  We have a website which has a lot of information and resources about vision loss and blindness, including vision loss training videos for teachers working with students with vision loss.  Here is the link to the blind/vision loss category on the website https://pandamn.org/category/blindness-and-vision-loss/    Click on the "Instructional Strategies" to find the videos.  The other resource we have on the website is a blindness/vision loss intake form which might help the teacher gain more information about the student's needs.  That form is located https://pandamn.org/forms/

I hope this helps

Wendy Sweeney, PANDA Manager

Thanks for sharing the resources from PANDA-Minnesota Adult Basic Education Physical and Nonapparent Disability Assistance, Wendy.  I especially appreciate your intake form and how you suggested it could be used to help the teacher gain more information from the student's perspective on their own needs as a learner.

Julie, I also want to mention the American Federation for the Blind (AFB)'s website, and in particular their technology resources for people with vision loss.  This can be helpful for the learner and teacher to explore different examples of high and low tech solutions that may help them access materials.  It may also be worthwhile for the teacher to share information with the learner about your state's Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) services.  VR works with learners across disability groups who need support and accommodations to pursue education and employment in the future.  They can find your state's VR program information here.

I hope these resources are helpful for you and your teacher.  If they have more specific questions, I hope you'll encourage them to ask the community for support in meeting this learner's needs.

Mike
