The LINCS Region II Professional Development Center invites you to participate in a PILOT of a FREE facilitated online course: Explicit Instruction, in August and September, 2016.

Explicit Instruction (EI) is a direct approach to teaching suitable for addressing any student goal, skill or content area. EI is primarily a method for *presenting* and *practicing* new information in a carefully prepared and scaffolded manner that supports mastery of KEY skills and concepts. This approach is particularly effective in addressing topics that often present adult learners with difficulties and/or for adult learners who face barriers to learning. While this course is primarily designed for adult education instructors working with native English-speaking adults at all literacy levels, it is also appropriate for instructors of ESL learners functioning at intermediate and higher levels of oral language skills.

REGISTRATION DEADLINE: Sunday, August 7th, 2016  [Limited to the first 20 participants who register.]

COURSE DATES: August 8th - September 20th.

ESTIMATED COMPLETION TIME: approximately 2-3 hours per week; 12-15 hours total over 6 weeks.
WE STRONGLY RECOMMEND you PLAN to work 2-3 hours EACH week during the course.

FACILITATOR: Juliana Taymans, Professor of Special Education and Disability Studies at George Washington University, Washington D.C.

COURSE FORMAT: facilitated, asynchronous, cohort-based  - course activities can be completed 24/7 during the 6 weeks.
[You will work at your own pace during the course dates and interact in writing with both peers and instructors.]

COURSE EXPECTATIONS: Participants who successfully complete course requirements by the course end date (September 20) will be able to download a *Certificate of Completion.* Participants are expected to:

•  read and post at least once in each of the course discussion forums;
•  watch recorded teaching demonstrations;
•  read course materials and consider reflective questions; and
•  submit all course assignments - which ask you to create, revise and share two EI lessons.

As this is a course PILOT, we ask that all participants complete the LINCS course evaluation and provide feedback on any issues they find within the course.

As course activities were designed following the EI approach, participants are provided with a first-hand learning experience similar to that of their own students. Course Goals:
     • Increase adult educators' understanding of explicit instruction, its key elements, applications, and purposes.
     • Assist adult educators in planning lessons that incorporate the elements of explicit instruction.
     • Help adult educators incorporate explicit instruction in to their everyday teaching practice.

While this course is primarily designed for adult education instructors working with native English-speaking adults at all literacy levels, it is also appropriate for instructors of ESL learners functioning at intermediate and higher levels of oral language skills.

NOTE: Because this a free course PILOT, space is limited to 20 participants on a 1st come, first served basis.  Registrations submitted after space limit is reached will be placed on a waiting list and notified on August 8th if space has become available.

TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS: Because it is a pilot, this course will NOT be hosted via the LINCS Learning Portal. Course access information (including UserID and password) will be e-mailed to registrants on August 8th.

We strongly recommend using a desktop or laptop with strong, reliable internet connection for accessing the course. 
***Course materials and activities are not designed for access via tablets and smartphones.***
You will also need to be able to:
  - read e-mails daily
 -  allow sites to open links in a new tab or window
 -  view videos from YouTube and
 -  download/open both pdf files and docx/rtf documents during this course.  
 - save, edit and upload documents to a web site.
