LINCS Literacy in Action Kick-Off Course Discussion: Question 1

Here is the first question in our science of reading round-robin discussion based on the LINCS course Teaching Adults to Read: Teaching Beginning and Intermediate Readers.” (see bulletin for full announcement).

Module 1: Try one or more of the diagnostic assessments with your students. What did you learn that is surprising?

Hello, Susan and all, Here is a link to one of the Word Recognition assessments in the Diagnostic Assessments section of the online course: Directions to the Word Reading Test of the Quick Adult Reading Inventory (QARI) Form A or B.  As far as I can tell, the course does not link to Form A and Form B.  I'm curious about accessing these word lists.  Any thoughts?

I'm also wondering if anyone has used either the Dolch or Fry Sight Word Tests with adult learners. If you have, please let us know about your experiences with these assessments.

Hi,

Here is a link to the QARI with the words for both forms A and B.

The Dolch and Fry lists are useful lists of the most common sight words, which can be used in adult education. However, they do not come with scoring criteria for levels like the QARI.

Thanks for sharing the link to the assessment mentioned in the course, Susan.

One assessment that I have used that isn't in the course is the Illinois Snapshots of Early Literacy. While this is technically a K-12 resource, I find it to be quick and incredibly accurate. Link HERE

Are there other assessments you use to test students on alphabetics?
