Basic Information
This lesson will help students learn about the geographical makeup of Mississippi. They will learn where different landscapes are located and what each landscape possess that makes them each unique.
How many landscapes are there? What is each known for? How do you differentiate between them? Are there similarities?
Objectives
Students will be able to describe several main landscapes that are prevalent in the state of Mississippi. They will also be able to list the main identifying factors of them.
Given a geographical map of Mississippi, students will be able to identify at least 3 different types of lands native to the state and write a paragraph about those landscapes and any familiarity they may have with them. This will be done during a 2 hour time block individually.
Instructional Strategies
Questions and Answers to find out how much the group already knows? Description of why it is important to know about your state of residence. Group discussions. Lecture of the pertinent information. Group labeling of the map.
Resources
Handouts, Maps, colored pencils/crayons, paper for writing paragraph, and Quiz to test knowledge gained. Projector.
Handouts will have all of the lesson information about the geography of Mississippi. It will be handed out after Q&A about the lesson. Projector will be used to display geographical map during discussion of the lesson. Maps and colored pencils/crayons will be used to label the map during discussion. Paper will be given for students to write their paragraph and the Quiz will be given just before the class is wrapped up to determine what students learned.

Warm-Up
Find out what was learned on the previous day or in the previous lesson from students.
Introduction
Explanation of lesson topic. Ask questions to provoke thought of knowledge on topic. Explain that we will be labeling a map and writing a paragraph. Letting them know that a quiz will be given at the conclusion of the class.
How many of you can name different areas in the state (not towns or cities), but areas named by the type of land? If you know of some, what are they called and why? How many have you physically visited? What did you think? If given a map of Mississippi without the cities on it, do you think you could label it?
