Book Study: Mathematical Mindsets by Jo Boaler

Beginning April 17, a micro group in Math and Numeracy will lead a virtual book study group examining Mathematical Mindsets, a book by Dr. Jo Boaler.

Mathematical Mindsets provides practical strategies and activities to help teachers show all learners that they can enjoy and succeed in math. Boaler’s work is based in current brain research about how learning can be enhanced by specific mathematical tasks and how the brain works when learning math – valuable information that all teachers can use to guide their course planning. The book is written in a readable style, featuring color images, a 50-page appendix of classroom activities, and an 8-page appendix about setting up positive norms in math class.

Interested participants can obtain the book now and review the discussion questions that will be covered. Community members need to join the group to access the questions. To do so, first log in to the LINCS Community, then join the Math and Numeracy group, next follow this link, https://community.lincs.ed.gov/group/book-study-mathematical-mindsets-jo-boaler, and click join.

The study group will occur over five weeks, from April 17 – May 19. Amy Vickers, a LINCS Trainer and a numeracy instructor and subject matter expert, will lead the book study.

Hope to see you there!

Thanks,

-The LINCS Team
