Building Communication Strategies to Retain Adult Learners

Event Type: Discussion Event Date: February 10-11, 2020   Join the LINCS Community Professional Development and Correctional and Reentry Education Groups for a discussion about strategic communication approaches designed to build rapport and connection with their students while maintaining professional boundaries. Many adult learners live in, or come from, high crisis environments that include poverty, trauma, and disrupted relationships and have developed mal-adaptive ways to communicate with others. This activity will help participants identify the appropriate levels of disclosure with learners, as well as how to utilize specific interventions to teach learners new and healthier ways to communicate.      Guest Tracy Palecek will demonstrate her communication approach through exploration of three levels of disclosure:
  • Level 1, discussion of facts and information;
  • Level 2, discussion of thoughts and emotions; and
  • Level 3, discussing personal thoughts and emotions.
  She will also present scripts to participants that demonstrate strategies to build rapport and connection without oversharing (Level 3). Scripts will provide an actual model of how to effectively use communication skills with purpose and intent while maintaining a professional relationship with the student.     Guest speaker bio: Tracy Palecek is a licensed Professional Counselor and a Licensed Social Worker who also has a passion for supporting and encouraging those brave souls in the helping professions. Tracy has many years of experience working with trauma and is also an Adverse Childhood Experiences Master Trainer and Fellow. Tracy’s current role is the Community Outreach and Education Specialist for Rapid City Collective Impact and the OneHeart Transformation Center.   How to participate?   Please join the discussion by first joining the Professional Development or Correctional and Reentry Education groups (or join both!). Anyone can visit the LINCS Community, but only members can contribute to the online discussion.   We hope you’ll share this event with your colleagues!   If you require special accommodations, please call 301-828-1526 or email scoleman@manhattanstrategy.com 7-10 days in advance, and we will do our best to assist you.   Thanks, The LINCS Team
