As we kick off the LINCS Community events this month,we have put together a preview of what's coming. Additionally, each month, you will find an announcement on the LINCS Community homepage about the month's upcoming professional development events.  At the end of the month, the month's activity digests will be archived in the LINCS Community Events Digest under the About tab for the LINCS Community.

Thank you for your participation in the LINCS Community--over 2000 of you have registered!  We hope to see many of you take advantage of the professional development opportunities hosted by your groups. Please feel free to contact me to make suggestions for other activities you would like to have happen.  Remember to invite a colleague to join you in the LINCS Community today!

TV411: What’s Cooking? Serving up Science and Math for Adult Learners

Alex  Quinn, Noah Goodman, and Lora Myers from the Education Development Center will host a webinar to introduce TV411: What’s Cooking?, a web-based cooking show that embeds basic science and math concepts in nutritious recipes.  The webinar will discuss strategies for integrating this resource into the adult education classroom.

The Health Literacy Hackathon: New Technologies to Improve Health Literacy (Part 1)

Join part one of the week-long discussion in the Health Literacy and Technology and Learning groups to brainstorm how technology and creative ideas can be used to help facilitate better health literacy. Common challenges presented in the discussions will be used to inform teams of technology developers who will design solutions in a live hackathon event on October 13-14, 2012 hosted by CommunicateHealth: http://hackathon.communicatehealth.com/

The Health Literacy Hackathon: New Technologies to Improve Health Literacy (Part 2)

Join part two of the week-long discussion in the Health Literacy and Technology and Learning groups to participate in a report-out of the live health literacy hackathon event hosted by CommunicateHealth. Special guests Stacy Robison, Xanthi Scrimgeour, Sandy Williams Hilfiker, and the rest of the CommunicateHealth team, will be joining the conversation.

Additional upcoming LINCS Community Professional Development Activities include:

  • Adult College Completion Toolkit Webinar: A guest panel will discuss the U.S. Department of Education’s recently released Adult College Completion Toolkit, a collection of resources designed to connect state administrators and local practitioners to the strategies, resources, and technical assistance tools resulting from the Department’s work in the area of adult education.
  • Disability Employment Awareness:  Activities are being planned around National Disability Employment Awareness Month which is a Department of Labor national campaign designed to raise awareness about disability employment issues and celebrates the many and varied contributions of America's workers with disabilities. This year's theme is "A Strong Workforce is an Inclusive Workforce: What Can YOU Do?"
  • Take Charge of your Future Toolkit Webinar: This discussion will focus on the newly released Take Charge of Your Future: Get the Education and Training You Need tool kit.
