Let's Talk Diversity in STEM and Literature

What can we do through instruction among adults to promote more diversity in STEM and other majority-led industries and publications?

1. The Importance of Mentoring to Increase Diversity in STEM: "Role models also directly affect academic performance by reducing stereotype threat. Stereotyped individuals tend to underperform in particular environments when worried their performance might perpetuate the negative stereotype. However, a successful role model in the student’s field can actually eliminate performance deficits that result from the stereotype." By Lesley McCollum, April 12, 2015 -- http://bitly.com/1S7rLBF

2. African-American Lawmakers Launch Initiative to Increase Diversity in the Tech Industry - “Many of the technology companies have African Americans as very loyal customers, and many of those don’t have any African Americans on their boards,” CBC Chairman G.K. Butterfield (D-N.C.) told The Hill. “Their senior leadership within many of these companies is not inclusive, and the workforce is appalling. And their reinvestment in African-American communities is less than desirable.” http://bit.ly/1FAFNIw

3. Diversity and the National Literacy Trust - "A lack of minority authors to inspire budding writers causes a dearth of them again in the next generation. The problem is exacerbated by a similar lack of minority characters in children’s books, if they even appear at all. It sends an unintentional message to children of minority backgrounds – reading and writing isn’t for them." http://bit.ly/1SculX4
