Non-Formal adult education and Drop-In Centers

Adult Education classes are provided by two types of programs:

1. Formal programs, which consist of City and Community colleges and Adult Education centers that receive funding from the government and therefore must comply with government requirements in the areas of assessment and attendance.

2. Non-Formal programs, which are offered free and “open” by non-profit agencies and receive no government funding, and often serve minority communities.

In some cities in the US, Networks have been formed which help to coordinate and publicize classes.

The Philadelphia Literacy Alliance is a good example of such a network. Under the auspices of the Mayor, students are assessed and enrolled at the approximately 100 member organizations. The Alliance also engages in joint fund-raising.

Recently I came across some articles about Drop-In adult education centers, which lately, it seems, have become more popular in Non-Formal programs sponsored by libraries, churches and community centers (Note 1).

Many of the classes offered are:

Home Language Literacy (L1)

Bilingual "Transition" English as a Foreign Language

English as a Foreign Language and other languages

GED

Citizenship

Job and career related courses

Computer skills for beginners and advanced students

Miscellaneous such as Drivers’ test, job related tests, etc.

Do you have any interest in this type of adult education center?
