BSP Developing Your Plan

We are interested in developing a more interactive partnership with the local college and prison. With available incentives through AOK and new money for career pathways, opportunities that once were out of the question may be an option. Adult education students in the prison would benefit through learning a skill that would lead to life sustaining wages in a legal manner. The college benefits through additional credit hours and community development. Each partner wins, inmates gain skills that help them succeed and avoid recidivism, the prison has a more productive and content population, the college is providing education, the community has individuals prepared for life and self sustaining. The strategy is to point out the positives and how it is not a huge cost but rather a collaborative effort of wrap around services with partners to provide a positive outcome. The specific career field being considered is construction. The area has need for more workers, and trained workers ready to start and be productive and reliant immediately is a huge bonus. Currently, research into the best way to implement the plan is in process.  Visitation to another location with this in place is scheduled.  The timeline is to decide for sure if it is feasible with in 6 months and if it is to have it ready to roll out in the fall of FY19.  Additional partners will be involved including local construction and construction related businesses, workforce, and local agencies.

Hi, Nance -

Thanks for sharing your vision for the new program you're planning.  It sounds like a potentially good opportunity for your learners, area employers, and community.  I'd also like to know more about AOK, and your organization's mission.  Who are your other partners, and where is your planned visit?  We may have other LINCS members who work with that program to help us all better understand the model you're proposing for your population.

If you have specific questions, please share them here, and I'll also invite the moderator for the Correctional Education community to join in the conversation.  She and the members of that community may also be able to help you gauge challenges, and possibly unforseen obstacles that you can more easily plan for now, rather than down the road.

Thanks again for sharing with us.  I look forward to learning more about your plans!

Nance,

I wonder if someone in the Correctional Education and Reentry Education CoP could be of assistance.  If it is okay, I will post your discussion in that community or you could edit your posted in here and select to post it to the Correctional Education and Reentry Education Cop.  Let me know if I can help!
