Building Excellence in Student Work: Models, Critique and Descriptive Feedback

Hello colleagues, Watching the Olympic Games reminds me of the critical role of coaching-- as well as commitment and persistence-- to improve performance. Just as feedback from a coach supports an athlete to improve, providing effective feedback to students on their work and allowing them to revise can lead to important learning. Take a look at this amazing video (Ron Berger -- Austin's Butterfly) that shows how a young student improved his work when first given a model and then offered descriptive feedback on how to improve. I was inspired by watching this.

What can we take away from this video about the value of providing models as well as offering detailed, descriptive feedback? The kids in the video also recognize the power of being given the opportunity to revise.

Looking forward to reading members' comments on this!
