Culturally responsive social studies

Hello colleagues, What are some ways to approach teaching social studies in a culturally responsive way? What resources are available to do so?

If this is a topic of interest to you, check out this blog by Holly Korbey, "A History in Which We Can All See Ourselves." Korbey shares links to various useful resources, including the Gilder Lehrman Collection which features many amazing primary source documents that can be drawn upon to address CCR standards.

Digging into US and world history seems especially important since a recent study showed that some American's knowledge of history is quite limited. e.g., 41% of survey respondents overall and 66% of millenials (ages 18-34) did not know what Auschwitz was.

Since adult literacy classes are full of learners from diverse backgrounds, it is especially important that we include aspects of history that relate to learners' cultural backgrounds. Doing so builds our own cultural competence as teachers. Thankfully, there are many online resources to do so.

You are invited to share your views on this important topics. Also, please let us know of excellent resources.

Cheers, Susan Finn Miller
