I'm wondering if I can get some input on what programs are calling themselves to identify English language instruction: ESL, ESOL, ELD. We currently use ESL but we're wondering what standard practices are moving towards because, of course, English is not the "second" language for many of our students.
Are there articles on this topic that I can find somewhere?

What I was told during CELTA training: ESL - English as a Second Language (for learners in an English speaking country who are planning on staying in that country) ESOL - English as a second or other language (for learners who may leave the English speaking country and return to their country of origin OR other non-English speaking country) ELD - English Learning Department (used in the primary and secondary schools in the U.S.). Hope this helps, some. It seems like ESOL is being used more frequently - just an observation. . . .
When I taught ESL to high schoolers in California(2001-03), ELD stood for English Language Development, not English Learning Department. I don't know if they still use the acronym ELD or not.
