Evidence Based Practice for the Emergent Literacy Learner

Is anyone familar with a study that attempted to demonstrate a correlation between the amount of words spoken in a household and a child's cognitive development?

The study would have been completed prior to 2009. Any information or would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Loretta: The most extensive research on household speech and children's cognitive development is the work by Betty Hart and Todd Risley nicely described in their book entitled Meaningful Differences in the Everyday Experience of Young Children, Paul H. Brookes Publishing Co., 1995. You can read about the Hart & Risley research in my paper entitled Getting It Right From the Start in the journal called American Educator published by the American Federation of Teachers. You can download my article by going to the AFT web site (aft.org) and searching under Publications. I also review the research of Hart & Risley in my free workshop on The Intergenerational Effects of Adult Education.
