I have used pictorial and list "needs assessments" to have students (in small groups) identify their choices for themes to cover in class. I looked for topics that were chosen by all or most of the groups to plan instruction.

We incorporate conversation groups with our adult ELLs. Each session has a theme that is relevant to their lives. They are grouped with ELLs who are at a slightly higher speaking level. We first review the questions together to assess if they understand what is being asked of them. Then we review vocabulary that is also provided. Students love meeting and talking to one another and learning about others' experiences.
