Health Literacy in ABE and ESOL: Join our discussion to address the numeracy needs of health!

Hello Numeracy Folks!

I want to invite you over to the Health Literacy Group to join a series of discussions about how to help our students use new skills to access healthcare, understand public health concerns, and take better care of their health from day to day.

Of course, it's easy to see how numeracy skills are critical to these vital tasks. From reading food labels to signing up for health insurance, people need some pretty high-level math skills to keep themselves and their families healthy. Using health as a "way in" to address math in a classroom setting can be very helpful. Students get very motivated when using health as a context for learning other skills.

Please join the Health Literacy Group to lend your voice to this effort, and to share your questions and needs. Kate Singleton, a longtime ESOL teacher and in recent years a social worker, is sharing her expertise and some very practical resources for addressing health in ABE and ESOL programs. This week was an Intro to Health Literacy, and next week we will be talking about specific resaources. Most of these are curricula and teaching activities, and will all include some lessons that relate to numeracy.

So please "come over" to the Health Literacy Group! Here's the direct link to the discussion so far:

Hope to "see" you there!
