Keep an Eye on the Health Literacy Group!

Dear LINCS Group Members,

I want to invite you all to keep an eye on the re-focused Health Literacy Group. Throughout the year, we will have some focused discussions that may interest you as a teacher or program administrator.

The LINCS Community Health Literacy Group will now focus on health literacy as it relates to adult basic education programs. In recent years, this Group has had a lot of discussion geared to the public health and medical community, but it is now trying to address the more specific needs of literacy teachers and programs.

This is how we see this group’s goals:

1)     To support adult education teachers who teach topic areas related to health, and

2)     To support teachers of students who have health literacy-related questions and needs.

3)     To support program administrators who want to start a health literacy project, join a statewide or regional health literacy initiative, or partner with local health agencies.

Here are some examples of what we could address that relate to other topic areas:

·      ELL

o   Teaching health literacy to English language learners

o   Using health literacy curricula designed for ELLs

·      Numeracy

o   Teaching numeracy skills for health

·      Science

o   Teaching health-related science concepts

·      Reading and Writing

o   Using health as a context for teaching reading and writing

·      Technology

o   Tech skills for the modern healthcare environment

o   Using Electronic Patient Records

·      Diversity

o   Accessing and understanding mental health services

Please tell us what health-related topics you would like to discuss!

All the best,

Julie
