Learning Disabilities and the Upcoming 5th Edition of the Diagnostic & Statistical Manual (DSM)

In another discussion thread, mention was made about the possibility of LD not being included as a coded disability in the next year's DSM.  Here is some updated information about that~

When the revised version of the Diagnostic & Statistical Manual (DSM) is published in May, 2013, dyslexia and other types of learning disabilities will be included. That is an important accomplishment for the field.  Dr. Sheldon Horowitz from the National Center for Learning Disabilities (NCLD) has stated:

"It validates what we, in the LD community, already know: LD is real and not a made-up term that is used to excuse poor effort or low motivation or to explain diminished capacity for learning."

Dr. Horowitz also cites a number of other reasons why the contents of the DSM, which is essential for the documentation needed by many professionals who provide services to children and adults, is crucial for our community. For more information on this story, go to:
