Is Post Traumatic Growth real? And what do we need to know about it for adult learners?

Many of our learners have experienced, or continue to experience adversity. For some, the adversity is trauma. We often talk about Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, but I'd like to shfit that narrative and discuss Post Traumatic Growth.  Post-Traumatic Growth Inventory looks for positive responses in five areas:

  • Appreciation of life.
  • Relationships with others.
  • New possibilities in life.
  • Personal strength.
  • Spiritual change.

Yet, this idea has drawn some criticism. The Trouble with Post Traumatic Growth, stating that perceived growth and actual growth are two different things.

What do you think? Is PTG real? and if so, how can we help students move toward growth after diviersity. I'd love to hear your thoughts.

SIncerely,
Kathy
