Professional Writers as a Classroom Resource

Hello colleagues, I've encountered a few interesting video interviews with professional writers talking about the craft of writing, and I think these video clips would be a wonderful way to engage students in discussing the writing process and how professionals approach their work.

I'm sure many members are familiar with the writer and humorist David Sedaris. In this Open Culture blog "David Sedaris Breaks Down His Writing Process," you can view a one and a half minute clip of Sedaris talking about his approach to writing.

How might you use a video clip such as this? What professional writers do you share with students?

Your thoughts are welcome here!

Hello colleagues, Certain professional writers have the potential to serve as wonderful role models for adult learners. They often write and/or speak about the writing process, and their words are often powerful and inspiring. What writer could you recommend?

In my view, Ta-Nehisi Coates is one of the most important people writing today. In this three-and-a-half minute video from the Atlantic magazine, Coates speaks candidly about the writing process and the need for perseverance. He says that writing is an act of courage.

Many adult learners would be moved by his message.

You are invited to add to the list!
