Some discussions you may have missed

Hello colleagues, I am highlighting some valuable discussions in our community that you may want to check out in case you missed them.

Time Management for Test Taking

The TABE test is timed. The GED and other high school equivalency tests are timed. Many other high stakes tests that students need to take are timed. Language learners almost always need far more time than is allowed on these tests.

  • How do you help students to manage their time so they can be most successful on a timed test?
  • Do you engage students in timed readings to prepare? If so what have been the results?
  • What time management techniques have been especially effective with language learners?

A Conversation about Instructional Routines with Stephanie Sommers

Stephanie Sommers recently joined us for a conversation about instructional routines. Stephanie explained the reasons why instructional routines matter. She and others shared many wonderful routines and resources, as well as how to effectively integrate routines into daily instruction. Come join the discussion to take away some great ideas and to share your own effective routines.

  • What are some routines to support learners to practice professional skills?
  • What are some routines for stress reduction?
  • What are some useful warm-up routines?
  • Might students view routines as boring?
  • What are some routines that support student persistence?
  • What are some routines for teaching reading and writing?

Writing about Test Worries Boosts Student Performance

Test anxiety can be a serious problem for many adult learners who take a high school equivalency or other high stakes test. Recent research has shown that engaging in a simple writing task before taking a test can help to relieve learners' anxiety and lead to positive results on the exam.

  • What are some ways you help students deal with test anxiety?
  • What are your thoughts about having learners spend a few minutes writing about their worries before they take a high stakes test?

Thanks for being part of our wonderful network of adult literacy education practitioners!
