What Do You Know About Motivational Interviews?

Motivational interviewing (MI) as an evidence-based practice that addresses consumer motivation, reluctance, and barriers to change. Oregon Vocational Rehabilitation developed three accessible Motivational Interviewing (MI) video series to help their vocational rehabilitation (VR) counselors and community resource providers gain skills to help VR participants build intrinsic motivation toward engagement and employment-related change goals. This 60-minute webinar will explore the following sets of videos and supplemental materials:

  • Special Topics in Motivational Interviewing (MI) Video Series from Oregon Vocational Rehabilitation covering topics that explain how to use MI in a VR setting including ethics, building a relationship, exchanging information, maintaining focus, engaging the wisdom of the team, working with young adults, adapting VR to your participant, and when pain takes center stage.
  • William - A Motivational Interviewing Demonstration Video Series from Oregon Vocational Rehabilitation engaging a VR participant with a decision to move forward on a plan.
  • Vocational Rehabilitation Motivational Interviewing Demonstration Video Seriesdemonstrating working in a VR setting with a participant who experiences and intellectual and developmental disability.

The videos can be used to complement or supplement MI training for groups or self-study. They are intended to help learners understand how to practice MI in VR settings. The videos were developed by Heather Lynch, MA, CRC, CWDP, a rehabilitation counselor at Oregon Vocational Rehabilitation who has worked in the Oregon Department of Human Services since 2006 supporting individuals with disabilities as they gain independence through employment. Lynch has been a motivational interviewing trainer since 2009 and is currently a member of the Motivational Interview Network of Trainers (MINT). If you utilize any of these resources for training, please cite that they were produced with public funds through Oregon Vocational Rehabilitation.

How might you use these videos with your adult learners, both with and without disabilities, to address interviewing practices with your students?
