Announcing Bilingualism  Online Module

Announcing Bilingualism

An online module for practitioners working with adult immigrants with limited home language literacy

21 October- 13 December 2020; module remains open until the end of January 2021

The EU-Speak Board is pleased to announce the October 2020 start of Bilingualism an online module for teachers and tutors. Hosted on a Moodle platform, it’s offered in English, Finnish, German, Spanish, and Turkish and for anyone who works or plans to work with adults learning to read and write for the first time in a new language; see LESLLA (Literacy Education and Second Language Learning for Adults). Modules run for 6 weeks. Bilingualism adds a 7th week for a workshop on collaborative translation of short non-fiction and fiction books into learners’ home languages.

Bilingualism takes a theoretical and practical approach to address the topic from various perspectives: linguistic, neurolinguistic, social and educational. Through relevant research, participants will explore individual and community bi-/multilingualism and discover ways to support bi-/multilingualism with learners and learners’ families and communities. Bilingualism is appropriate for teachers and tutors with little training or preparation for working with LESLLA learners as well as for seasoned specialists.

A £30 (about $39) registration fee provides an enrollment key to gain initial access to the module. This covers all administrative and technical support, without which the volunteer EU-Speak Board cannot offer modules. There is no further charge for a personalized certificate of completion or access to the module for an additional six weeks after it ends in December. The module is led by module designer Belma Haznedar and co-facilitated by Fernanda Minuz and Theresa Wall; see their profiles at https://www.leslla.org/hub-development-team.

Registration opens on Monday, 12 October. On the module start date, Wednesday, 21 October, module content will be accessible. For more information, including the module syllabus and requirements for a certificate, see https://research.ncl.ac.uk/eu-speak/modules/bilingualism/
