ELLs and Podcasts

Hi there, I was hoping to hear from ELL instructors who have helped create a podcast that involved their adult ELL students. Alternately, I'd be curious to hear from adult ELL instructors who can share some ways that they use podcasts with adult students. I'm the editor of Notebook, published by ProLiteracy, and this is for an article. You're welcome to post to the group (it should make for an interesting discussion!) but you are also welcome to email me at caceresvanessa@yahoo.com with your insights. Thanks.

Hello Vanessa, Thanks so much for posting. Podcast creation is a highly engaging activity to engage learners in. It's wonderful that you plan to write an article for ProLiteracy's Adult Literacy Education journal on this topic. (By the way, members should know that this journal is freely available!)

I'm eager to hear from teachers who have used podcasting in their classrooms. In the meantime, here's link to a previous LINCS discussion thread on this topic that might be of interest to you and others.

Cheers, Susan Finn Miller

Thanks, Susan! I appreciate the link to the previous discussion thread and hope that others find it useful as well. Also, just to let everyone know, this is actually for ProLiteracy's Notebook, sent three times a year to ProLiteracy members to provide instructional lessons and ideass (although the Adult Literacy Education Journal is great, too).

Thanks,

Vanessa

Hi Vanessa,

I think Susan may have linked you to the previous discussion that I was a part of. I did end up creating a podcast with my learners, and it went extremely well. We had been working on a story about someone's experience going to the doctor during the pandemic and the idea of getting screened for anxiety and/or depression at the doctor's. The learners worked as a whole class and chose different roles to collaboratively write a script and record the podcast. They also came up with ways to cope with stress and sadness as a group and researched more information to present in the podcast.

I'm glad to send you my materials if you're curious. I previously did a PAACE webinar on using podcasts with ELLs as well and am trying to get a copy from Chrissie Klinger, the Workforce moderator here on LINCS, so I can share that with you as well.

Feel free to contact me directly via email at scole@tiu11.org

Thanks,

Sara
