Follow-up Discussion: Workforce Prep Resources for English Learners

Hello colleagues, I want to thank Moira Taylor and Ellen Baxt for a fantastic presentation today in which they provided an overview of the amazing and freely available CUNY CareerKits. These CareerKits offer teachers and learners the opportunity to dig into the following careers:

  • Healthcare
  • Technology
  • Community & Social Services
  • Education & Childcare
  • Manufacturing
  • Hospitality, Recreation, & the Arts
  • Food Production
  • Retail
  • Construction
  • Transportation & Warehousing

As noted on the CUNY site, "There is also a foundational, multi-sector CareerKit, called Career Fundamentals, that introduces students to key questions related to career decision-making."

Each CareerKit is organized in the same manner and features many meaningful, learner-centered activities to support valuable critical thinking skills as well as fundamental skills such as reading, writing, speaking and listening as well as vocabulary and grammar. Our guests also highlighted a CareerKit Adaptations resource which outlines ways to adapt many of the lessons for lower-level learners.

If you would like to receive the slides shared by Ellen and Moira, please email them directly, and they'll gladly send you the presentation.
