  • How do students  take turns talking?
  • What kind of activities do you have for in person students to do with online students? My students did not like being paired that way. The reason was they came to  f2f class to interact with other people in person.]
  • How does this include the asynchronous students? I am interested to hear how you include students that go that route
  • Do you find that you have lost class learning time because of needing to give instructions in two modalities?

  • Students can utilize the "raise hand" feature in Zoom or Google Meet if they want to have a turn in speaking. You can also call on specific students to contribute to the discussion. In my class, I'll call on one student and after that student shares, he/she will pick the next student to share in the discussion.
  • I understand that our in-person students might struggle with engaging with their online classmates. As I mentioned in my presentation, live polling using PollEverywhere or Mentimeter is a great option. Have students collaborate together using Google Docs or Jamboard. You can refer to the digital substitutions document as well as this additional engagement activities document for more inspiration!
  • Having a Learning Management System (LMS) is key here. It doesn't have to D2L, but whichever LMS you're using now, like Google Classroom, Moodle, Canvas, BlackBoard, etc. Or even using Padlet or Wakelet where students can refer to for resources, links to recordings or assignments will help. Creating an online community via LMS and including your synchronous students into it will foster a great learning environment. In addition to an LMS, definitely take advantage of WhatsApp, Remind, or another messaging app that your students use. I created a WhatsApp group chat for my English class and I will ocassionally provide prompts for students to engage with each other and encourage students to share questions, video, and images in the group chat.
  • Yes, I do feel that I lose a lot of instructional time during class when addressing both modalities separately. That being said, it's important to not make the activities too complicated to reduce any issues that might arise. But then be intentional in adding that extra time to explain these activities. You might not be able to include additional content into your lesson plan because your time is taken up with these explanations but the important thing is that students have equal learning outcomes.
