This is a very intriguing puzzle!
It looks like part of the directions are cut off. Should they say, "You can only move directly to the right or directly [down]?
If those are the directions, I wondered if there was an easier way to solve this problem. I tried to see how many ways there would be to go in a 2 x 2 square. I came up with 5. Did I miss any? (The numbers with the lines show how many squares I moved):
