Four Charitable Foundations to consider that award small grants for adult basic education and other programs

Program Management Colleagues,

If you are seeking small grants for your program, here are four foundations you may wish to consider. As far as I can tell, none have grant deadlines, so you could apply any time.

1. Wish You Well Foundation  Grants support child and family literacy programs. Priority goes to development and expansion of new and existing literacy and educational programs. Eligibility: Nonprofit organizations.  Awards: Up to $10,000.

2. Singing for Change Social and Environmental Problem Solving Grants  Singing for Change, created by musician Jimmy Buffet in 1995, offers $1,000-$10,000 grants to politically progressive nonprofits working to address the root causes of social or environmental problems. Focus areas include disenfranchised groups, especially to projects that “help people overcome social or economic barriers to education or employment; promote the empowerment of individuals toward self-sufficiency, and provide opportunities for personal growth that benefit their greater community; and demonstrate human equality and encourage people to cross boundary lines to help others."

3. Sunoco Foundation  The Foundation aligns giving and business strategy with focus as two of its three key areas: 1) Workforce Development; and  2) Strengthening Communities. Eligible: 501c3 nonprofits Awards: $500 to $10,000 (local); $2,500 to $500,000 (national)

4. Cruise Industry Charitable Foundation The Foundation actively supports programs that meet the needs of economically disadvantaged populations. Proposals that incorporate partnerships with community groups and local organizations are encouraged. Priorities: 1) Communities where the industry does business; 2) Civic and Community Development; 3) Education and Training; 4) Environment; 5) Public Health. Eligible: 501c3 nonprofits Awards: $2,500 to $15,000  (Note: adult basic skills programs that wish to partner with Federally Qualified Community Health Centers for the mutual benefit of patients/students, might consider this foundation to support that work.

Here are three more charitable foundations that award small grants for which your adult basic skills (including English language) program may be eligible:

  • Sociological Initiatives Foundation, 8/15/2017 (Concept Proposals) Funding focus: research that furthers social change, including language learning and behavior and its intersection with social and policy questions. Eligible: 501c3 nonprofits Awards: Up to $20,000
  • Target Corporation, 8/1/2017 to 10/01/2017 Target Field Trip Grants fund experiences that connect students' classroom curricula to out-of-school experiences, from January to June. Eligible: U.S. 501c3 nonprofit, school or public agency located within 100 miles of a Target store. Awards: Up to $700.
  • Open Meadows Foundation, 8/15 and 2/15 – Annually Seeks projects that promote gender/racial/economic justice. The projects must be led by and benefit women and girls. Open Meadows is specifically looking to direct its resources towards changing the world. Eligible: 501c3 nonprofits with budgets under $75,000 Awards: Under $2,000
