TABE accomodations

Hi all,

I'm wondering what accommodations should be provided for a student who is unable to use their hands. It may be a temporary condition, but I'm not sure. The student needs to take a TABE test for evaluation in an HSE program. Should someone sit with the student and mark the answer sheet for them? Is there another accommodation that should be provided?

Thanks for your help,

Hi, Eric -

I just checked the TABE's Guidelines to Inclusive Testing Accommodationsand don't see a clear category of accommodations based on physical disabilities, whether temporary or permanent.  I tried calling and speaking to someone at TABE, but was only able to leave a message and then send an email inquiry.  I'll follow-up when I hear back, but I would assume there's a pathway for this learner to either have a scribe or use a speech-to-text accommodation to record their responses.

Hopefully we'll get more direction soon.  Thanks for asking the question.  If others have had any experience with this type of accommodation request, please let us know.

Hi, Eric -

Below is a copy of the email conversation I had with DRC about your student's need for an accommodation.  I hope this helps.  Let us know if you have other questions.

Mike

My Message:

I am interested in what accommodations can be applied for a learner registered for the TABE who has lost use of their arms? Can a scribe be employed? What steps should our the program administrator follow to request this or another allowed accommodations for this learner?
Thank you.
Mike Cruse

DRC RESPONSE:

You can use the link below as a guide.

TABE_Guidelines_to_Inclusive_Testing_2017.pdf (tabetest.com)

You need to indicate that you are using accommodations on the first part of the test.

Since this is a test for adults, you need to adhere to your state and local guidelines to give you guidance.

My Message:

Thanks for your quick response. Unfortunately, there's nothing in this document about accommodations for physical disabilities.  If a scribe is an allowed accommodation in this case, please let me know and the program staff can ensure that it is documented in the first part of the test.

Thank you
Mike Cruse

DRC RESPONSE:

Yes, that is allowed. We do advise that for blind test takers as well.

I would suggest you have someone read the test to this individual.  Otherwise you could get a splint that holds a pencil so the individual can mark their answers them self; however, if this is the route used, they should be given extra time

Michael and Wendy,

I appreciate the information. I will pass it along to the teacher who asked me the question. Michael, thanks so much for reaching out to DRC. It didn't occur to me to try that, but I will next time!
