Florida Health Literacy Grant Application Now Open

Hello Group,

The Florida Health Literacy Initiative, supported by Florida Blue, is now accepting applications.

We are pleased to continue the Florida Health Literacy Initiative into its 8th year, providing grants to advance health literacy in adult ESOL and family literacy programs. Through the generous support of the Florida Blue Foundation, at least 14 mini-grants of up to $5,000 will be awarded in May 2016. The mini-grants are available only to organizations in the state of Florida.

More information and the application can be found on the Florida Literacy Coalition website.

Hi Catherine and HL group members:

Thank you for posting this, Catherine.  While some of us live pretty far from Florida, we can certainly learn from the coalition's mini-grant experience.  This includes access to the curricular resources (including a LINCS/Florida Literacy Coalition Teacher's Guide for Staying Healthy for Beginners) and three short "Staying Healthy" teaching videos located on the bottom of the resource page (Healthcare, Nutrition, Ways to Stay Healthy).  In Florida Literacy Coalition's initial evaluation of the Staying Healthy curriculum, over 90% of the students indicated that the health information learned in class helped them in their everyday life and that they shared the information learned in class with family and friends.

Have you used the Florida Health Literacy resources with your students?  Do you have other health literacy teaching resource suggestions to share with the group?

Cynthia
