Collegues,
I invite you to watch this three minute video called Betty White is my Grandma. I found the story fun and humorous! But it let me to this prompt about background knowledge and shared vocabulary. After watching this, I wondered how m any of my students missed the point of a lesson or struggled with comprehension due to lack of a shared vocabulary.
After watching the video, check out the LINCS resource Effective Vocabulary Instruction for Kindergarten to 12th Grade Students Experiencing Learning Disabilities. I'd like to discuss the following:
- How important is a shared vocabulary?
- How do you build a shared vocabulary?
- What strategies from the LINCS resource can you apply to your classroom?
I'm looking forward to the conversation.
Sincerely,
Kathy Tracey

All kinds of things to think about there ;) I wonder if the first kiddo hadn't said "Betty White," if the rest would have just used whatever "grandma" term was first used.
I have no idea if a movie like this would get students talking. If I weren't a teacher with a shared vocabulary w/ him, I wouldn't understand a lot of it.
