August Summary

Hello Colleagues!  As we welcome September we can reflect on many meaningful discussions that took place during July in our Reading and Writing Community of Practice:

Phone farming, reading, writing, listening, speaking, critical thinking and the "gig economy" as an engaging focus of your lessons

In this discussion, cross-posted in Career pathways and Integrating Technology, David Rosen introduced us to phone farming as a gig economy.  Admittedly, I was unfamiliar with both of these terms, so this was very interesting to me.  While this may be an option for employment for our students, unfortunately, “it brings in a little extra income to the phone farmer.”  David posed the following questions to prompt discussions in our classrooms:

"How would a gig economy conversation be useful in an ABE, ESL/ESOL or HSE class? It could be a great way to develop arguments for writing or critiquing an essay on the pros and cons of the gig economy in general or about particular gig jobs. The discussion could, for some, be an engaging way to practice English speaking and listening skills. Could some lessons include numeracy or mathematics? How about science? How about social sciences?"

Leecy Wise, on behalf of Thomas Sticht, posted information on how to enter this 4th lottery for a chance to win one of three historical literacy artifacts.  This was a great opportunity and Tom emailed all winners.  Thank you, Tom!

Argument Writing

In this discussion I posted some strategies presented in a training I attended to use when teaching argument writing.    I especially like the use of advertisements to demonstrate for students how to analyze the claims the advertisers are making.  I would like to continue this discussion.  Please continue to post how you engage students in argument writing.

Exploring Media Literacy for Adult Learners

Cross-posted in Career pathways, English Language Acquisition, Integrating Technology, Teaching and learning, and Disabilities and Equitable Outcomes, this discussion posted by Michael Cruse, announced that LINCS and The National Association for Media Literacy Education (NAMLE) are collaborating on a webinar and panel discussion later this year, focusing on media literacy for adult educators.  This was, by far, the most viewed discussion in August!  I invite you to revisit this discussion to access much information and many sites related to this topic.  I’m sure we are all looking forward to this future discussion!

GED Prep Resources

Leecy Wise posted the resource site, https://mycareertools.com/ to begin this discussion.  Other threads brought up the evaluation of curriculum and online resources.  This is a valuable discussion as we are accessing more online resources and using new curriculums that are aligned to the CCR standards.  Let us know your thoughts by revisiting this discussion!

Does your adult literacy program host a community read?  Do adult learners participate in improvisation, writing and performance projects?

David Rosen begins this discussion (cross-posted in English Language Acquisition) by stating, “I am fascinated by the Redlands California Adult Literacy Program's choosing Seedfolks by award-winning author Paul Fleischman as its community read this year, and by its hosting a free performance of the book.”  I love this concept!  Please add to this discussion to let the community know if/how you are holding a community read!

So, as you can see, it really has been a busy month for the Reading and Writing Cop!  As programs and classrooms are beginning another school year, I am interested to know plans for reading and writing instruction.  What will you implement that is new?  What great strategies and lessons will you continue?  Most importantly, remember to celebrate Adult Literacy with your students this month!
