Explicit Instruction in Adult Education Virtually-Facilitated Course: Syllabus

The LINCS Professional Development (PD) Center is pleased to announce that a new virtually-facilitated online course on explicit instruction is now available for states to request.

The course, Explicit Instruction for Adult Learners, is entirely online in the LINCS Learning Portal. The course is facilitated by LINCS trainers with expertise in teaching adults with learning disabilities.

Explicit instruction is a research-based methodology for teaching academic content and skills. Explicit Instruction is designed to enable learners to gradually take more responsibility for their learning with the goal of students becoming self-regulated learners. This course introduces the principles of Explicit Instruction and provides both curricular materials and video examples of how Explicit Instruction can be implemented in adult education classroom.  Course participants will also be guided through a step-by-step process to develop Explicit Instruction lesson plans to meet the needs of their learners.

Through six online sessions that will take participants approximately 12 hours of engagement, participants can expect to:

  • Improve understanding of explicit instruction, its key elements, applications, and purposes.
  • Plan lessons that incorporate the elements of explicit instruction.
  • Incorporate explicit instruction in their teaching practice.

  • Timing: States can select dates and times for the course to be delivered.
  • Participation: States can select participants or open enrollment to individuals in their states. Enrollment is typically capped at 30 participants.

This course may especially be of interest to states interested in providing professional development that supports state leadership requirements described in the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA). WIOA Section 223 (a)(1)(B) requires states to provide high-quality professional development programs to improve instruction, including instruction related to the specific needs of adult learners.

There's a reference to a syllabus, but I don't see an attachment or link to it. Is there something available that describes the completion requirements?  Thanks - Sandy

I'm so happy to see this.  The EI framework is by far the most useful thing I've learned in adult ed.  It informs everything I do.  I can't think of a more valuable way to spend PD time.  I'll be giving a heads up to our local PD center in IL.  Thanks!
