New Course: Using Open Educational Resources for Science

The LINCS Professional Development Center is offering a virtually facilitated, freely available course on Open Educational Resources (OER) for science. The OER course was created by American Institutes for Research (AIR). The course is facilitated by a highly experienced LINCS Facilitator. Registration is limited to 15 participants.

All participants are required to complete a 3.5 hour prerequisite course, Open Your Classroom with Open Educational Resources, and submit their Certificate of Completion to Kaye Beall at pdcenter@lincs.ed.gov before completing the registration process. Participants will be enrolled on a first-come, first-served basis.

Open Science-Open Resources: Engage Adult Learners for 21st Century Skills (July 30–October 1)

This course will help instructors find quality OER for the adult education classroom, evaluate and assess OER effectiveness in meeting learning objectives, and provide instructors with ideas and resources for instructional strategies to introduce and engage adult learners learning either math or science.

Courses are accessible through the LINCS Learning Portal. Each OER course lasts eight weeks, and enrollees should allot 3–5 hours for weekly engagement.

Please contact pdcenter@lincs.ed.gov with any questions.

What characteristics about herself does Jeanette mention that are similar to the adult learners you serve? •

Jeanette didn’t have a background in biotech. She sought a pathway program and realized that she wanted to set goals higher.  Most of my students don’t really know the path they want to follow. Most need exposure to an industry and career exploration opportunities to determine their true path.

What has motivated her to persist in the biotech program? •

Attaining lower level certification in pursuit of the higher level goals.

What supports does she mention that you could incorporate in your local program?

Providing relevant training in classes related to the pathway desired to help give confidence and motivation.
